The City and County of Honolulu’s proposal for an augmented reality art project has been named a finalist in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ 2018 Public Art Challenge
The winner of the competition, which drew more than 200 submissions from cities across the U.S., will be eligible to receive up to $1 million as part of a program that aims to support local economies through public art.
Honolulu’s “Layers of Honolulu” project proposes the creation of augmented reality art experiences layered on 10 bronze statues to tell the stories of Hawaiian communities that have been displaced due to colonialism and urban development.
